Product Engineering

Backend Engineer

Bucharest, Romania
Hybrid
Mid-senior

Building and growing products for curious, ambitious people who want to learn and keep getting better. Wanna join the tribe?

Deepstash is a micro-learning platform with millions of users consuming bite-sized insights on everything from psychology to productivity. Paladin teaches history through interactive, narrative-driven experiences. Protocol focuses on longevity and personal optimization, helping people make better decisions for their long-term performance. Together, our products serve over 10 million users worldwide.

Behind them is an awesome 60-person team based in Bucharest, led by repeat founders who’ve already built and successfully exited a global product company, but somehow decided to do it all over again. Bigger, better, even more fun this time.

We're a fast-growing consumer scaleup with strong unit economics and a proven ability to build, launch, and scale multiple products in parallel - fast, deliberately, and without unnecessary ceremony. Our current focus is on scaling what already works, expanding the product portfolio with the same core DNA, and strengthening the systems that let us move lightening-fast without breaking (too much) stuff.

This tends to be a great place and time for people who are comfortable making decisions, owning the outcome, and don’t need a committee to get good work out the door. If that sounds like you, here’s how you’d fit in:

The role:

We’re looking for a backend engineer who resonates with the idea of building products that actually help people grow - and who’s excited to work on systems that sit at the core of a real, scaled consumer business. You’ll spend a lot of time around payments, subscriptions, and platform fundamentals, while also helping raise the bar for the engineers around you.

This isn’t a “ticket factory” role. It’s for someone who wants to own meaningful pieces of the system and see their work used by millions of people.

What you’ll do:

  • Join a small, efficient team building educational products used by millions of users
  • Own and improve core backend domains: subscriptions, payments, authentication, system architecture (scalability, observability, CI/CD)
  • Ship fast, but deliberately - working closely with founders and product leaders to test ideas without piling up hidden debt
  • Propose and lead system improvements where friction or technical debt is slowing us down
  • Lead through collaboration: code reviews, knowledge sharing, helping others level up
  • Contribute to infrastructure: deployments, debugging production issues, keeping systems reliable as we scale
  • Use AI as a force multiplier to move faster and think better, not as a gimmick

Who you are:

  • You like shipping things that real users touch
  • You’re comfortable owning problems end to end, not just executing tasks
  • You learn fast, ask good questions, and don’t wait to be told exactly what to do
  • You care about product impact as much as technical correctness

Skills:

We’re looking for strong fundamentals and good judgment - not checkbox perfection.

  • 4+ years building scalable backend systems, with 2+ years in production environments
  • Solid experience with SQL and NoSQL, ideally PostgreSQL
  • Cloud infrastructure experience, preferably AWS
  • Comfortable working in a fast-iterating product environment
  • Experience establishing and maintaining sane engineering practices

(We use Python / Django / AWS, but we care more about how you think than the exact stack.)

What you get:

  • A high-impact role in a fast-moving consumer scaleup
  • Real ownership over critical systems
  • Direct collaboration with founders and product leadership
  • The chance to help shape how engineering works as the company scales

Hybrid work setup:

We’re building a more scalable engineering culture and we believe that some time together in the same room still matters. We expect you to be in the office 3+ days per week.

Office or not, expect real ownership, real problems, and a steady pace of shipping.

How to apply

Please send us an email at join@deepstash.com

  • insert [Backend engineer] in the email subject
  • tell us a bit about yourself:
Why you, why this role, why now? What made you stop and apply?
What have you built, shipped, or owned that shows how you work?

Side projects count, a CV is optional. If it helps, attach it, but if it doesn’t, just skip it. We care more about how you think and what you’ve actually shipped into the world, focus on that.

If this role sounds like something you’d enjoy owning, apply. No grand gestures required, just curiosity and a willingness to build. Now would be a good time to apply, yes.
